The Summer Of 1939 was the last summer of Luisia’s childhood, the Holocaust would take much of her extended family, thought and Aunt and a cousin would make it through, having escaped to Switzerland. I am reviewing a copy of Long Journey Home Through Usher Publishing and Netgalley: A Young Girl's Memoir of Surviving the Holocaust I would write a scene then forget about the book for months on end. I would begin a chapter then throw it away. However, I don’t know if I should count the first three years because it was a lot of start and stop. Technically this was a seven year project. How long did you work on this novel, from the tiniest idea until your final edit? Sprinkle a bit of relief mixed with a touch of swelled ego and that’s pretty much the whole of it. Anyways, it is the end of a long journey and I am feeling quite blessed to have seen my story survive the trip from initial conception to final publication. I also feel like I am baring my soul to the world and bracing for either bullets or roses. Of course, I am excited to finally launch Torin Ten-Trees on his adventure across the realm of Noros and invite others to take part in his journey. What am I feeling right now? I would say it is an erratic pendulum of emotions which undulate between elation and nausea. As your debut, how are you feeling? Nervous? Excited? Like a medieval king bathing in the spoils of (literary) war?Īh, this is a good question. The Gatewatch come out this Sunday, May 17. Wendell comes to disability studies as a feminist theorist with a chronic illness who, upon her diagnosis, realized that feminist theory was largely geared toward nondisabled experiences and that the wealth of knowledges about disabled experiences could usefully inform feminist understandings and theories of the body. I use the terms “rejected body” and “negative body” to refer to those aspects of bodily life (such as illness, disability, weakness, and dying), bodily appearance (usually deviations from the cultural ideals of the body), and bodily experience (including most forms of bodily suffering) that are feared, ignored, despised, and/or rejected in a society and its culture. In some ways, this is a chapter-by-chapter breakdown of Susan Wendell’s The Rejected Body: Feminist Philosophical Reflections on Disability, and in some ways it’s just a smattering of ideas that really interest me, so this isn’t a comprehensive review-although since I’m 18 years late to the game, maybe that’s not necessary! It’s been a long time since I read a book (really read a book) for no reason other than I was interested in it and had time to savor it.
